The Guns Of September
Spiegelman’s “The Guns of September” September 1993
The New Yorker was founded in 1925 and has now been published 47 times annually. It mostly focuses on the cultural life of New York City, but it is read internationally. It is most known for its writing on current political and social issues.
In this New Yorker cover “The Guns Of September” you probably think what is this supposed to be about. Here is a little interpretation of what I thought of this cover.
Spiegelman really uses detail when he draws this cover. The cover is very detailed when it shows the children holding all of these different guns and they are all in different cultural outfits. If you look at the cover it shows children from all different backgrounds walking into what seems like a school with massive guns in hand. It seems as if these children are just walking into school as they do everyday with smiles on their faces and guns in hand. There is even a mother in the background walking her son into school and he has what seems to be a machine gun in hand.
When this cover was printed there was a rise in school shootings. Most of which were done by students and young adults. This cover is trying to show that these students came from all different backgrounds, races, cultures, and genders. It is showing that it really could be anybody that is committing these crimes. The children are just walking through the doors with guns in hand like a normal day. He is trying to bring awareness to school shootings and stricter gun laws. If you look closely at the cover it isn't just showing American children, it shows children from other countries too. At this time Americans were on edge about school shootings and want to know more about what is going on. Many Americans are sending their children to school and want to know if it is safe. Some may believe that reading this article will keep them more informed and possibly protect their children from these hateful types of crime.
